Amazon Wish List

I'm getting a big wish list these days and I'm not sure I'll ever come up with the funds to purchase all my items.. but now I found more that I NEED!

Hooooot

I've wanted owl dishes for a while now. Saw these at Bed Bath and Beyond and they were my first love. Just found these too ... and of course they're not cheap.

Why We Travel

NY Times has this collection of stories from world travelers. It makes me want to go even more than I did before.

Here's an exerpt from one about diving in the Maldives (dream!):

"You realize you’re swimming with these wonderful animals who do what they want — you can’t force anything; you’re just there to float along and look at the beauty of nature flowing underwater. You’re constantly surprised by your environment, like you’ve been given this extraordinary moment, like a gift.”

Check it out...

I am back at work today, but only because of my friend Theraflu. I will have to troll around online before I can find any cool stuff to share with you. Patience loves.

American Bride in Paris

♥ this photo shoot from Junebug Weddings. I was sort of considering growing out my bangs... but this girl makes me remember why I got bangs.. cause they're awesome. :)

Eat This: Walnut Crusted Salmon

I need to eat more fish. Especially salmon because it has so many health benefits. And it's delicious as well. I made this last night and I'm promising to eat fish at least twice a week starting now.

Type Tattoos

♥ these tattoos. Almost makes me want another one.

Top image is a tattoo drawn by calligrapher, Betsy Dunlap. She has some great calligraphy work. That reminds me I need to practice my skills (or lack thereof).

Bottom image is typographer/graphic designer Jessica Hische. I'm betting she designed this herself...

Wouldn't this be cute in a cozy bedroom? I wish I could paint all my walls earthy colors and get new bedding.

A Powerful Image

Martin Luther King Jr. at Home - Photo Essays - TIME

In this photograph, Coretta is upset with her husband, who had been attacked the night before by a disturbed white racist but had not defended himself. Though the police urged King to press charges, he refused. “The system we live under creates people such as this youth,” he said. “I’m not interested in pressing charges. I’m interested in changing the kind of system that produces such men.”

Ok. I'm a little late with this... would have been better had I found this on Monday, but still worth posting.

Life...

Clean House

Happy Friday. I promised myself I'd actually clean today before I end up napping and not getting anything done for the day. So that's the plan. Oh that and make a really healthy, veggie-filled dinner. I'm doing so well with the working out, but the whole diet thing has been slacking this week. Jillian would be mad.

Turkish Breakfast

Anthony Bourdain kills me. He gets to go all around the world eating. Travel and eating are probably my favorite things. Although I seriously wonder how he isn't 300 pounds since (at least how the show is edited) he appears to eat meal after meal in a short period of time. Anyway...

Last week's episode was Istanbul. A place which I've never given much thought to.. but after seeing the traditional Turkish breakfast? I'm there. Mass amounts of cheese and bread, yogurt, honey with cream for dipping, yogurt, eggs, olives and tomatoes. Yum.

L♥VE

The Brown Palace in Denver is having some awesome deals for the month of February. They have a chocolate brunch, Valentine's Tea, a Romantic Palace Arms Dinner and even some spa specials. (The spa there is sooo nice). When you make a reservation you're entered to win a night in one of the Presidential Suites (super fancy).

The Brown is like 2 miles from my house, but when you're in there it feels like you're really on vacation. A lavish, romantic vacation. I got to go last February. Again, lucky me.

Just thought I'd share. :)

All Inclusive in Colorado

I love that Trip Advisor does Traveler's Choice Awards every year. Last year this is how I discovered the amazing Dunton Hot Springs. I freaked because first of all it looked amazingly beautiful and luxurious, but also because it was actually in CO! (An 8 hour drive from Denver, but still). And then I got to go visit in June for my birthday. I'm a lucky girl. :)

This year, Dunton is still on the list at #7, but the #1 All Inclusive Resort is in CO as well! It's Drowsy Water Ranch in Granby. I think I have a new vacation idea. I highly doubt that it's as incredible as Dunton, but it's less than half the price and a much shorter drive. And it got #1 in the world. I think we need to check it out.

Dream Office

Design shop Parliament in Portland, Oregon has a pretty sweet office. I enjoy their work as well. Good stuff.

I want to play dress up...

Bathing Beauties

I love, love this new trend of the high-waisted bikini bottom (on the right). I've never been much of a bikini-wearer because I never feel comfortable. I think this may be the solution.

Now for that beachy vacation.

Boot Love

Pending my tax refund, I will be purchasing new boots. I have had my brown ones for 6-ish years and they're about gone.. and the black ones are not even that old, but they are in need of major repair.

So.. I think it's time to purchase some trusty Frye boots. My mom has had hers for like 40 years and they look great. (So I'm using her boots as an example of how long mine better last if I pay $300+ for them). I hope this works.

Eat This: Pumpkin Spice Bread

My db wants to start cooking and baking more (without setting things on fire) so last night we gave this pumpkin bread a try. It's a nice combo of sweet and savory - with sour cream as an ingredient. Plus it makes your house smell so nice and even if you're not hungry you'll want a piece or two.

Make it!

Pumpkin Spice Bread (recipe by Karen DeMasco)

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/2 cup grapeseed oil
  • 3/4 cup canned pumpkin puree
  • 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon sour cream
  • 3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon Demerara sugar

Preheat oven to 350° F. Line the bottom of a 8 1/2 x 4 1/2-inch loaf pan with parchment, and grease the bottom and sides with butter.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, egg yolk, and oil. Add the pumpkin, sour cream, and vanilla and whisk well to combine. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. Using a rubber spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet. Then whisk together gently just to combine.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle the top with the Demerara sugar.

Bake until the bread is firm to the touch, well browned, and slightly cracked on top, about 55 minutes. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let stand for 5 minutes. Turn out the loaf onto rack and let cool.

I just came across the work of Hope Gangloff. Love, love this illustration style. Really makes me wish I could draw.. and you'd think I'd be able to after 4 college drawing classes.

Bouquets

How cool are these? They're made from vintage brooches rather than live flowers. I love it. I think I need to start a weekly tradition of thrifting. I'm totally inspired to start some funky collections.
